Remembering Ted
THE ASH CEREMONY

Hawai'ian Farewell to Ted
OCTOBER 26, 2024

The ash ceremony was performed by members of Hawai'ian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society (HOCVS). Uncle Kimokeo Kapahulehua led the service both on the beach and on the water. We want to thank all who gathered to paddle out with us. A live webcast was offered to those unable to attend in person.

The ash ceremony or commonly called the paddle out is a Hawai'ian custom. The ceremony is a beautiful way to celebrate the life of someone who chose to be cremated. It allows guests to reflect on the life of their loved one while spreading their ashes in a meaningful place. On this day, family and friends will paddle out on canoes, SUPs, and surfboards as part of the service. Folks are encouraged to bring loose flowers to spread along with the ashes. As an avid outrigger canoe paddler and ho'okele (steersman or captain), it was Ted's wish to be returned to the sea where he spent much of his retirement years. He loved every moment of being on the waters of Maui.
